VoteWA is Washington's official personal voter lookup. It confirms a matching registration after the voter enters the name and full birth date tied to the record. This is the right first step for checking whether a registration is active, reviewing the registered address, finding political jurisdictions and precinct information, or tracking ballot status. A logged-in voter can also reach election and voter-guide details and registration update tools. Access is free.
The login is designed to identify one voter's own record. It is not a browseable Spokane County surname index. The fields below explain why someone who knows only a name cannot use VoteWA as a third-party directory.

A failed match is not firm proof that no registration exists. Check spelling, the birth date, and whether the voter recently changed a name or address. Spokane County Elections can confirm the next step. A voter may also call 509-477-2320 and ask the office to mail an official registration card. That fallback matters when the login fails or paper proof is preferred.

VoteWA Is Not a People Directory
The phrase “voter lookup” can sound like an open search for anyone registered in Spokane County. VoteWA works differently. Full date of birth is part of its authentication, yet full birth dates are not among the voter fields released for public inspection. Washington replaces that sensitive detail with year of birth in the releasable record. The distinction protects identity data while still allowing defined public access to the rolls.
Use the personal portal for your own status and ballot facts. Use the Spokane County election-data form or the Secretary of State extract for a lawful research dataset. Mixing those channels leads to bad conclusions: a VoteWA non-match may be a data-entry issue, while a public extract may already be out of date after a move or registration update.
The VoteWA myth. Knowing a Spokane County voter's name is not enough. The portal requires that person's registered name and complete birth date.
Fields in Spokane County Voter Records
RCW 29A.08.710 defines the registration fields available for public inspection and copying. The list is exact. It permits useful civic research while excluding the identity documents and authentication details used to create or update a registration. Spokane County voter records therefore show participation and jurisdiction, but they do not form a full personal profile.

Washington does not register voters by political party. There is no party-affiliation field to retrieve. Voting history also has a narrow meaning: it may show that a person took part in a listed election or returned a ballot, but the secret ballot prevents disclosure of how that person voted. These limits apply equally to a county list and a statewide extract.
Confidential by Washington law. Full birth dates, signatures, driver's-license or state-ID data, Social Security number fragments, and protected participant addresses are outside the public field list.
Protected Spokane County Voter Addresses
Washington's Address Confidentiality Program gives eligible survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, trafficking, and stalking, along with certain protected workers, a substitute mailing address. Chapter 40.24 RCW governs the program. RCW 40.24.060 applies its protection to voter disclosures, so a public voter roll must not defeat the substitute-address system.
This is more than a missing field. It changes how a record should be read. An address carried in a released Spokane County voter file may be the lawful substitute used for agency contact, not the participant's physical home. Election staff and the Secretary of State control disclosure. A requester should never try to work around that protection through repeated searches or by merging the voter file with other sources.
Spokane County Registration Status Changes
Voter status is not static. Official address-confirmation procedures can move a registration to inactive status. Cancellation may follow death, a duplicate record, relocation, the voter's own request, disqualification, or completion of the statutory confirmation and inactivity process. Federal National Voter Registration Act safeguards bar cancellation merely because someone did not vote and impose confirmation and waiting rules.
For the voter, VoteWA is the best current operational check. For a researcher, the date of an extract matters just as much as the status field. A person shown as active in an older file may since have moved or cancelled, and an inactive entry should not be treated as proof that the person still lives at the listed address. Request Spokane County Voter Files
The Spokane County Election Data Request Form offers a tailored electronic list for $20. A requester identifies the organization, committee, or individual; supplies an address, email, and phone; chooses the full county or one district; and selects the desired fields. Delivery may be by email, flash drive, or CD. The form also supports a matchback request, a weekday list of returned ballots that begins two weeks before an election.
- Choose the scope. Mark Full County or Single District and identify the district when narrowing the file.
- Select only the needed fields. Options include name, residential or mailing address, precinct, year of birth, gender, jurisdiction, registration date, registration number, and history for up to five named elections.
- Complete the requestor and delivery details. Submit the form to Spokane County Elections and include the required signed statement concerning lawful use of voter-registration lists.
- Confirm the $20 product and chosen medium with Elections. Compare it first with the free statewide extract when custom county filtering is not needed.
The county form is best when a Spokane County district cut, selected fields, or local matchback product is needed. It is not the only file channel. The Secretary of State publishes statewide voter-registration database extracts at no charge, and Spokane County registrations sit within that larger dataset.
Free Washington Voter Roll Extracts
The Washington Secretary of State voter-registration data service is the practical alternative to a paid county list. It provides statewide extracts for no fee. Start there when a statewide file will meet the need, then isolate Spokane County through the file's jurisdiction data rather than paying for custom local output.
Special voter-data laws control these files even though Washington also has a broad Public Records Act. RCW 29A.08.720 restricts furnishing or using registration lists for commercial purposes and requires a signed statement. RCW 29A.08.740 addresses violations. Public access never permits stalking, harassment, threats, or an attempt to expose a protected address. Narrow civic, historical, or genealogical research is the sound frame, and the requested fields should fit that purpose.

Historic Spokane County Voter Records
Current VoteWA results do not replace old registration registers, precinct returns, canvass records, or poll books. Search the Washington State Digital Archives collections by Spokane County Auditor or Elections and by the record-series title. Coverage varies by series. The research did not locate an official online finding aid with exact Spokane poll-book or registration-register year ranges, so no continuous run should be assumed.
When the online catalog is silent, contact the Washington State Archives Eastern Regional Branch in Cheney and ask about unindexed volumes. County Elections is another request path for retained local election material. Historical poll books can establish a voter's precinct and participation context, but they never reveal a marked choice. That same secret-ballot limit runs from old paper poll books to today's electronic participation histories.
Names, boundaries, and precincts can change across time. Give archive staff the person's name variants, approximate election year, municipality, and suspected precinct if known. A narrow request is more likely to locate the right volume than a broad demand for every Spokane County voter record.
